Ace your Road Test with These Tips!
Preparation is the key to success and confidence on test day!
- Drive straight going no more than 20mph.
- When the examiner says “STOP”, stop the car as quickly and safely as possible.
- Turn your head to look back, don’t use just the mirrors or the camera.
- Do not accelerate. Just lift your foot slowly off the brake.
- Left turn signal ON. Wheels all the way to the LEFT. Look around. Move slowly forward as close to the curb as possible, and stop.
- Turn wheels all the way to the RIGHT. Put the car in REVERSE gear. Look around. Move slowly backward as close to the curb as possible, and stop.
- Turn wheels all the way to the LEFT. Put the car in DRIVE gear. Look around. Move slowly forward.
- Car has to be in the right lane. Left turn signal ON. Move the car slowly to align the frame of the left mirror with the first white line of the parking you’re going into. Wheels all the way to the left. Look around. Move slowly to keep control of the car and adjust as necessary.
- When the front of the car is inside the parking, look straight ahead to start straightening the wheels. Keep moving slowly and adjust as necessary.
- Stop the car once the mirrors are next to the cones. Put the transmission in Parking, and set the emergency brake (optional).
Uphill with Curb
Turn wheels all the way to the LEFT.
Downhill with Curb
Turn wheels all the way to the RIGHT.
Uphill without Curb
Turn wheels all the way to the RIGHT.
- Say the direction of the wheels based on the question as shown in the picture above.
- Emergency brake
- Park
- Turn OFF the car
- Make sure wheels are straight. Put transmission in Reverse and slowly start backing in a straight line until the side mirrors are lined up at the end of the parking spaces.
- Turn the wheels ALL THE WAY to the OPPOSITE side that you’re heading. In this example, the car is going to the LEFT, so the wheels are all the way to the RIGHT. Keep backing slowly until the left mirror is about in the middle of the road.
- Turn the wheels ALL THE WAY to the side you’re heading. In this example it is all the way to the LEFT. Put transmission in DRIVE and slowly incorporate in the right lane.
MORE TIPS
- Obey Stop Signs. The vehicle has to come to a complete stop before reaching the stop line or crosswalk. Count until 5, look both ways multiple times, when safe start moving.
- Yield Right-Of-Way. Allow pedestrians to cross, safely move over for stop vehicles or obstacles on the road, pull over and stop for emergency vehicles, do not block intersections.
- Obey Traffic Signals. Approach the light slowly so that you can stop if the light changes. Do not enter the intersection on yellow.
- Stay in Proper Lane. Drive always on the right lane, unless told otherwise by the examiner.
- Turn Signals. When making a turn, always go into the right lane. Turn the signal ahead of the turn.
- Relax and go at your own pace (always below speed limit).
